What: Dragonfly Detectives is an inquiry-based, science discovery program where students study dragonflies in the field and collect data to contribute to scientific research. This mini-camp engages youth in the project over a 5-day period in a half day, day-camp style setting.
Who: North Carolina students; rising 5th–8th graders
When: August 6–10, 9:30am–12:30pm
Where: Prairie Ridge Ecostation, 1671 Gold Star Drive, Raleigh NC 27607. Note that this class takes place entirely outdoors.
Why: Students will learn how to make hypotheses, collect data, analyze their results, and will have the opportunity to publicly present their findings. Participants will also learn about aquatic systems, animal migrations, dragonfly identification, careers in science — all while doing a variety of fun, educational, and hands-on activities. Each student will take home a toolkit so they can continue to study science and contribute to citizen science on their own!
