Museum hosts live viewing of NASA’s latest mission to Mars

Join us for a special program titled “MAVEN to Mars,” beginning at 1pm in the SECU Daily Planet Theater. Learn more about this latest NASA mission from Dr. Rachel Smith, Director, and Dr. Patrick Treuthardt, Assistant Director, of the Museum’s Astronomy Research Lab. Then watch the launch live from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, currently scheduled for 1:28pm.

The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission (MAVEN) will explore the planet’s upper atmosphere, ionosphere and interactions with the sun and solar wind. Scientists will use MAVEN data to determine the role that loss of volatile compounds — such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and water — from the Mars atmosphere to space has played through time, giving insight into the history of Mars atmosphere and climate, liquid water and planetary habitability.
