Visit the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and witness a live in-flight downlink from the International Space Station (ISS) with NASA astronaut and North Carolina native Dr. Tom Marshburn.  Classes from local elementary, middle and high schools will be in attendance and select students will have the opportunity to ask Marshburn questions during the downlink. The audio/video downlink will take place 10:15–10:35am* on Tuesday, February 5 from the Main Auditorium (for invited school groups) and other locations within the Museum (for the public).

Marshburn was selected for this downlink due to his strong North Carolina ties — he was born in Statesville, received a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Davidson College and a doctorate of medicine degree from Wake Forest University. He has been with NASA since 1994, starting out as a flight surgeon assigned to Space Shuttle Medical Operations and to the joint US/Russian Space Program. Marshburn completed his first spaceflight in July 2009, logging more than 15 days and 6,547,853 million miles in space, including three spacewalks. He returns to the ISS in December 2012 as a flight engineer for Expeditions 34 and 35 — a nearly six-month mission.

Additional programming will be held throughout the day, including presentations from NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassadors in the SECU Daily Planet Theater, hands-on activities in the Nature Research Center’s Visualization iLab and Space Observation Research Laboratory, and more.

Students invited to attend and ask questions during the downlink come from Raleigh’s Moore Square Museum Magnet Middle School, Cathedral School, Wake Young Women’s Leadership Academy and Wake Young Men’s Leadership Academy.
