Girls in Science Connect:Nature
Girls in Science Connect:Nature at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is an intensive 8-week program for 6th- and 7th-grade girls who have shown ability and strong interest in the sciences, especially the natural sciences. The Girls in Science mission is to engage girls in hands-on science experiences in the natural world and in the Museum, and to create a safe atmosphere where girls’ natural curiosity can flourish. We will meet female scientists from a range of scientific disciplines, go behind the scenes at the Museum, and get our hands dirty in the field. The program concludes with a Night at the Museum overnight stay and an Open House to share with parents and teachers. Through fun and exciting programs, girls will connect with each other and with female mentors, and will be empowered to ask questions and discover the world around them.
We can accept up to 20 girls from Wake or the surrounding counties to participate in this 8-week program. Students must be nominated by their current or previous science teachers and recommended by another adult unrelated to them. Students meet weekly from 3:30 to 5:30pm and take part in one weekend overnight adventure. Participating in Girls in Science Connect:Nature is a major time investment. Please consider this when applying. There is a $150 program fee to cover equipment and expenses, due by the first day of the program.
A complete schedule with topics and meeting locations will be provided to participants. All programs will meet at the Museum or at Prairie Ridge Ecostation.
