Family Science Investigation:Epidemiology - Who Started the Epidemic? and Now What?
Students undergo a series of “interactions” that unknowingly spread an “epidemic” throughout the class. They must solve the mystery of who started the epidemic, as no one but the instructor knows. The class must backtrack through their series of interactions, record results from lab testing, and determine from graphs just how quickly the “infection” spread and where it might have originated. They must also evaluate the effectiveness of different hand-washing methods in order to make “prevention recommendations” based on their results. Emotional questions are explored as students share what they felt by being “at risk,” finding out they got the disease, or finding out they started the epidemic. Ethical questions will be raised about how to balance protecting society from an unknown and deadly disease, manage people’s fears, and protect the rights of infected individuals who may be treated poorly by others.
Family Science Investigations programs offer families an opportunity to participate together in monthly science classes related to Museum research, including topics in ecology, paleontology, geology and biology. These classes are especially useful for homeschoolers looking for additional reinforcement to curriculum goals, or any family group that simply enjoys learning together!
