From electric orange plumes to alluring blue legs, bright yellow mouths and elaborate dances, birds-of-paradise use fantastic feathers and bizarre behaviors to wow females in dazzling courtship displays.
Get inspired by the bold primary colors of the Wilson’s Bird-of-Paradise, the elaborate head wires of the King of Saxony Bird-of-Paradise, the iridescent chest of the Magnificent Riflebird, and the jewel-like tail wires of the King Bird-of-Paradise to design your own vibrant costume. Craft your own plumed hats, capes and tail feathers with Anthony Hinton, Discovery Room Curator, and the Scrap Exchange of Durham.
Then it’s time to get down and shake those tail feathers at Dance, Dance Evolution in the Birds of Paradise: Amazing Avian Evolution special exhibit. Learn the steps to the Wahnes’ Parotia signature dance and strut your stuff while onlookers vote for their favorite performance. Prizes will be awarded to dancers.
Now open to the general public! Registration is required. All supplies included. Refreshments will be served.
