SUMMER CAMP POSITIONS 2013
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh is now hiring enthusiastic staff for its 2013 Summer Camps! The Museum offers week-long, full-day and half-day hands-on science camps for children in Pre-K through 8th grades. Camps start June 3rd and end August 9th, 2013. Museum camps are offered in three locations – The Museum building in downtown Raleigh, Yates Mill County Park in Southern Wake County, and Prairie Ridge Ecostation in West Raleigh. Please notice that these positions do not include our residential camps (Boys and Girls in Science)- these are already staffed by permanent Museum employees. Positions Available
Summer Camp Co-Manager (2 positions available) – This position assists the Summer Camp Director to ensure that all of the camps are organized, supplied, and running smoothly on a daily basis. Candidates should have the ability to work with diverse age groups including campers AND parents, have previous experience in a formal or informal education setting, be a team leader as well as a team member, and be able to interact professionally with Museum staff. The manager position must have a college degree or equivalent experience. This position pays $ 14/hr. This position is based at the Museum’s main building in downtown Raleigh, but will occasionally travel to other camp locations.
Co-Lead Instructor– Co-Lead instructors work with their partner instructor (or assistant) to prepare and present hands-on natural science programs and informal science activities for campers on a daily basis. Lead instructors work closely with Museum staff and the Summer Camp Director to incorporate Museum materials and program goals. Successful candidates will have the ability to communicate an enthusiasm for natural science to children. They should have previous experience in a formal or informal education setting, and work well with others in a collaborative environment. Educators must have a college degree or equivalent experience. Salary starts at $12.75/hour. Co-Lead Instructors are located at all locations. Assistant Instructor - This position works under the supervision of a Lead Instructor in providing hands-on, informal science learning activities. Assistants help to prepare and present natural science programs to groups of up to 16 children. Candidates should have an interest in the natural sciences, ability to communicate effectively and an enthusiasm for science teaching. Past experience working with children is preferred. Assistants must have a high school degree/GED and previous applicable work experience. This position starts at $10.50/hour. Assistants are located at all locations. All positions are temporary positions working for the summer an average of 40-50 hours per week (any hours above 40 will be paid at the overtime rate). Camp hours vary by location. Downtown Museum camps run from 8:45am-5:00pm, Prairie Ridge camps run from 8:30am-3:30pm, and Yates Mill camps run from 8:30am-3:30pm. Staff are expected to arrive at camp locations a minimum of 30 minutes before the program begins and stay afterwards for clean up.
All summer camp staff must be willing to undergo an extensive background check before the hiring process can be complete. All staff are required to attend mandatory orientation on Thursday March 21 from 4-7 pm (dinner will be provided), and staff trainings on Thursday April 18th and 25th. Additional hours, up to a maximum of 30, are available for program development, class set-up, staff training, animal handling training, and end of camp clean up.
