Anna's Hummingbird [1]

(Calypte anna)

This species occurs primarily in the western United States and Canada. An immature male was reported on November 29 1998 visiting a hummingbird feeder in a Charlotte neighborhood. This bird stayed around until March 1 1999.

Here we see the typical dark greenish-gray "smudge" of the breast and flanks.

 

Hatch year male: note the distinct purplish-red feathers; by March these will cover the throat and head.
