Learn more about the crazy cool science of chemistry at Chemistry Day 2011!
RALEIGH—The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and the North Carolina section of the American Chemical Society have teamed up once again to present Chemistry Day on Saturday, October 15 from 11 am to 4 pm at the Museum, located in downtown Raleigh at the corner of Jones and Salisbury streets. All of the Chemistry Day activities will take place on the first floor of the Museum. Free. This year’s theme is “Chemistry: Our Health, Our Future.”
Chemistry is a physical science that deals with matter and energy and the interactions between them. At Chemistry Day, kids and adults can discover there is more to chemistry than just the periodic table as they participate in hands-on chemical experiments, exhibits and special presentations.
Exhibitors from the American Chemical Society, North Carolina State University, Duke University, Meredith College and Artspace will be on hand to talk about chemistry and health, metals in food, countertop chemistry and the electrochemistry of the brain.
Artspace will have an exhibit on the chemistry of batiks to coincide with our current special exhibit, “Our Expanding Oceans: The Blending of Art and Science ,” which is based on the book "Global Climate Change: A Primer," authored by Dr. Orrin Pilkey and his son Keith Pilkey. To illustrate the major elements of global climate change, from melting ice to rising seas, more than 50 hand-dyed silk batiks created by artist Mary Edna Fraser are on display. These batiks depict aerial, satellite and conceptual perspectives of our environment. That exhibit is also free.
At 11:30 am, 1 pm and 2:30 pm, Dr. Sol Levine from the American Chemical Society will give a lecture entitled “States of Matter” inside Windows on the World located on the third floor of the Museum. For more information about Chemistry Day, contact Bonnie Eamick at 919.733.7450, x554.
