Now
is the perfect time to notice the bright red berries of the aptly named
winterberry shrub. Unlike the more commonly known American holly, this
holly has spineless leaves that fall off in winter. Like other hollies,
winterberry flowers are unisexual, which means that only female shrubs
produce fruit. Gray catbirds and brown thrashers feast on the berries.
