Aster lateriflorus
Like
other composite flowers, the starved aster "flower" is actually comprised
of hundreds of flowers. Each "petal" is actually a female flower, called
a ray flower. The ray flowers range from white to pale purple. The center
is made up of hundreds of disk flowers, both male and female. As the
flowers are pollinated, the central disk flowers change from yellow
to purple-red. Commonly found in fields and borders, the fall bloomers
grow best in partial shade. Plant seeds in fall or spring and your new
asters are sure to attract butterflies and bees the following season.
