Solidago
sp.
Fall
brings a fabulous display of beautiful goldenrod which provide nectar
for butterflies and pollen for a variety of insects. Unfortunately many
people do not grow it in their gardens due to the mistaken belief that
goldenrod causes allergies. It does not. Goldenrod is pollinated by
the myriad of bugs that are attracted to its composite flowers. The
only way that goldenrod might make you sneeze is if a bug accidentally
crawls up your nose! Many places are marketing both goldenrod cut flowers
and plants under its Latin name, Solidago. Solidago comes
from the Latin word that means "to make whole" or "to heal", a name
chosen because it was believed to have medicinal properties. So what
does cause those fall allergies if it is not goldenrod? Ragweed, which
blooms at the same time, is the culprit of all of those sneezes.
