| Pseudacris crucifer
It
may not feel like spring, but listen closely and you'll hear the
sounds of warm weather on the way. Spring peepers, one-inch treefrogs,
are beginning to call this month and will continue through the spring.
The call is a peep that sounds a little like a baby chick.
You'll hear large
choruses near wetland areas where shallow water and grassy plants mix.
If you get close to one of the tiny noisemakers, you can identify spring
peepers by the X on their backs and the presence of toe pads.
