six-lined racerunner
Cnemidophorus sexlineatus

black racer snakeIf you've ever been hiking and seen a lizard that appeared to be moving at Mach 10, you may have seen a six-lined racerunner. Found throughout most of the state in sandy soils near open areas, a few populations of these lizards are scattered around the Raleigh area. During hot summer months, you can glimpse them speeding across the ground in search of small arthropods. Unlike many other North Carolina lizards, six-lined racerunners don’t climb trees to escape. Even so, it's quite a workout for anyone who sets out to catch one.
