green tree frog

green tree frogSee those frogs near your porch light? They’re green tree frogs if you notice white stripes on their sides, expanded toe pads for climbing, and green skin color. This southern frog recently has expanded its range into the eastern Piedmont of North Carolina, probably because of a series of mild winters and the introduction of aquatic weeds like hydrilla that provide protective cover for tadpoles. These little hoppers frequently come to house lights in search of insects. Fortunately, the population declines experienced by many amphibians seem largely to have passed by the green tree frog.
