Sceloporus
undulatus
You'll
find this gray spiny lizard basking in the late autumn sun, perched
atop fence posts or rocky outcrops. As you approach, it abruptly darts
to the nearest tree and hides on the far side of its trunk. If disturbed
again, it dashes upward and around a second time. Because of this quick
departure, lots of people call these lizards fence swifts. If you're
lucky enough to catch one, you may glimpse the turquoise underside of
the male's belly and throat. Dark wavy lines on their backs distinguish
females. A true bug-eating wonder, this reptile is an astounding addition
to any backyard garden.
