Copperhead
Agkistrodon contortrix

copperhead snakeCopperheads account for more venomous snakebites than the other five venomous species in North Carolina combined. Copperheads are frequently found in suburban areas with woodlands nearby. Fatal copperhead bites are almost unheard of, but you should seek proper medical treatment if bitten. The best protection is to recognize the copperhead before you're in range of its bite, then avoid the reptile. Watch for reddish-brown, hourglass-shaped bands with tan between. They also have elliptical pupils, heat-sensing facial pits, and a single row of scales under the tail. Young copperheads may have yellow-tipped tails.
