Black racers are one of the most commonly encountered snakes in central North Carolina—and true to their name, also the fastest. With the coming of warm weather, these long, slender serpents emerge from underground hibernation. Frequently seen basking in pools of sunlight along hiking trails and field edges, they’ll make a hasty retreat if disturbed. Because they eat harmful insects and rodents, these rapid reptiles make great neighbors.
