Planning Your Visit

BEST TIME
The Museum is least crowded from October through February. Museum Hours

WHAT ARE MY FIELD TRIP OPTIONS?

Option 1: Museum visit

Explore, discover, and learn at your own pace with a self-guided experience.

  • All groups not registered for fee-based Museum student programs (see Option 2) are required to schedule their visit through the Capital Area Visitor Services (CAVS), toll free 1.866.SCH.TOUR. Please do not call the Museum to schedule your visit. Once you have contacted CAVS, you will receive priority admission to the Museum.
  • Museum staff will orient your group before they
    enter the Museum.
  • One and a half hours are recommended to visit the
    Museum’s nine exhibit halls.
  • Admission to the main exhibit halls is free.
  • The Special Exhibits Gallery allows a close-up look at science and nature through unique exhibits. Information on group admission rates.
  • Note: Before you contact CAVS, please be sure you have determined your preferred dates and times, as well as the number of children and chaperones who will be visiting.

Option 2: Museum visit plus student program
Explore the Museum before or after your group participates in a fee-based student program.

  • Curriculum-correlated student programs for preschool–grade 12 help you integrate the Museum experience into your classroom.
  • Prior registration with the Capital Area Visitor Services is not required unless your group plans to visit another facility in the Capital area.
Student Programs: Discovery Fun (Preschool–Grade 1)
  Curiosity Class (Grades K–5)
  Tropical Connections (Grades 5–7)
  Natural History Investigations (Grades 5–12)
