Museum in the Schools

The Museum in the Schools program partners elementary schools with the Museum to train students to create a museum experience in the classroom. The program builds on students’ inherent curiosity about the natural world by providing real objects and reference materials for student research. After becoming knowledgeable about their topic and developing their speaking skills, the students travel to other classes and sites to give presentations. Participation in this program positively affects basic skills in reading, writing, science and math, and improves students’ attitudes towards science and living things. Students gain self-esteem and confidence as they present their new knowledge to their peers.

Museum in the Schools began in 1995 with the support of a Christa McCauliffe Fellowship granted to Susan Bradburn of West Marion Elementary school in Marion, North Carolina. Thanks to a variety of funding sources, including grants and local support, more than 30 schools in 20 counties have participated in the Museum in the Schools program. Cost to the schools is approximately $1,500. For more information, contact M.T. Fore, coordinator of student outreach and distance learning, at 919.733.7450 x621 or mary.tyler.fore@ncdenr.gov.
