Equipment Used: Submarine Johnson Sea-Link
Estimated Catch: 17 specimens
Description of catch:
- 9 Galathae crabs
- 2 Dragonet fish
- 2 Hermit crabs
- 1 Pin shell
- 2 Box crabs
- 1 unidentified flat spiral shell (resembled the cut-off top of a conch, but was the entire animal)
Other Observations: Sub descended to an
area where there was supposed to be an abundance of fish, but instead found a very empty landscape.
Equipment Used: Neuston Net
Estimated Catch: No fish caught
Other Observations: Very royal blue water suggests there is not much in the water for fish to eat. Phytoplankton would make the water appear green.
Equipment Used: Neuston Net
Estimated Catch: 1 Coronet fish
Description of catch: The net looked as if it had nothing in it, but when we looked more closely, we found a small, skinny fish that was about 10 cm in length. The specimen was very narrow and resembled a coffee straw. It was a light tan color, and its eyes were one-third of the way back on its body. The mouth was puckered, making it look like it wanted to kiss other fish. The fins were incredibly small and were close to the body. Coronet fish are related to seahorses.
Equipment Used: Neuston Net
Estimated Catch: 2 specimens
Description of catch:
- 1 Trigger fish
- 1 Comb jelly
Other Observations: The trigger fish
was about 1.5 cm and was blue with an orange tail. The size of the
fish indicates that it was a juvenile. Trigger fish can grow to be
an estimated 25-30 cm in length.
Equipment Used: Otter Trawl
Estimated Catch: Not provided
Description of catch:
- Flounder
- Grunts
- Squid
- Lizard fish
- Rock shrimp
- Scorpion Fish
Other Observations: There were small clumps of sargassum visible before we put in the net.
Equipment Used: Otter Trawl
Estimated Catch: Not provided
Description of catch:
- "Big eyes" fish
- Tattlers
- Flounder
- 2 octopi
- "High hat" fish
- Lizard fish
Other Observations: After this net came in, the captain halted catch operations for the evening. The winds were too high and the seas were too rough for us to be on the stern of the ship. Waves continually crashed over the stern, making it hazardous.
Equipment Used: None
Estimated Catch: 1 Flying fish
Description of catch: Not provided
Other Observations: A wave washed one flying fish onto our deck. Someone scooped it up so we could use it for our study. We think he is a research volunteer!
