Questions about the Weather
What's the weather
like there? (2003)
Since Belize is near the equator,
the weather is tropical and very constant year round. The
temperatures typically range from 78° (25°C) at night
to 90° (32°C) during the day. It often gets hotter
in North Carolina, but Belize is much more humid, which makes
it feel hot!
Has Monkey River recovered from Hurricane Iris? (2003)
Yes, mostly. Everything was destroyed during the hurricane, including homes and schools. Most homes have been rebuilt but the school is not yet complete.
How has the climate affected your trip? —a 9th grader from Davidson County (2004)
The county of Belize is experiencing an
unusual dry spell right now. We have had little
rain and that has not affected our activity.
But the climate is very humid, especially
in the rainforest, where our clothes were
wet from sweat and humidity!
How does the weather compare to North Carolina? (2005)
The summer weather in Belize is similar to the weather in North Carolina. The
temperature is in the high 80's to low 90's with a lot of humidity, rain and thunderstorms.
Does it really rain every day in the rainforest? —Ashley, a 10th grader from Alamance County, North Carolina (2006)
Since we have been here it has rained every day and everywhere we have visited, not just in the rainforest. It has rained everyday because it is the rainy season in Belize right now.
How does the climate affect the vegetation and wildlife? —Joe, an 8th grade student from Mecklenburg County, NC (2006)
A good example of how climate affects the wildlife and vegetation is the Coral Reef. Coral Reefs only thrive in warm shallow tropical seas. Most corals are dependent on a yellow-brown alga, zooxanthellae, to produce additional food for the coral. The coral polyps provide shelter for the algae. The coral colony, composed of large numbers of polyps, provides shelter for other animals such as small fish, tube worms and crabs. These small inhabitants become prey for larger animals. If the climate changes, if it becomes too warm or too cold, the coral would die and the animals that depended on the corals will not survive.
