After
an early morning bird walk and a wonderful
breakfast at Kitty's Place we gathered
our snorkeling equipment and then loaded
into boats and headed out to some small
islands, which are called 'cayes' but
are pronounced 'keys.' We took a 30-minute
boat ride to Loggerhead Caye. With our
underwater camera (marine invertebrates
and fish watchers guides attached!),
we dove into the beautiful aqua water.
We were amazed at the beauty of the
ocean life! Creatures we saw in this
beautiful home were: the common sea
fan, sea whip, sea rod, giant tube sponge,
brain coral, elkhorn coral, foureye
butterfly fish, parrot fish, barracuda,
Atlantis spadefish, and stoplight parrotfish
(which come in many different colors
and eat coral).
Too soon it was time to
stop for lunch at French Louis Caye.
While there we ate Creole food and explored
the island, which is smaller than a
football field!
After lunch we headed
to Saddleback Caye for further exploration.
We found many more wonderful ocean animals
such as: manta ray, moray eel, sea cucumber,
spiny lobster, sea urchins, smooth star
coral, gorgonia, lizard fish, and French
angelfish, just to name a few.
Around 3 p.m. it was time
to head back to Kitty's Place. We were
in for one more treat: we spotted a
mother dolphin and her baby swimming
in the mangroves!
We had a wonderful day
of snorkeling and can hardly wait to
see what tomorrow adventure will brings
us! |
