Day Two: July 20, 2004
Mountain Pine Ridge

2004 Q & A

After a delicious breakfast we took off to explore caves in the Mountain Pine Ridge. Along the way to the Domingo Ruiz Cave we saw many types of trees including Caribbean Pines, Give and Take Palms, and Mahogany. We also saw some interesting animals such as Basilisks and a Wish Willy (iguana).

Wearing headlamps and carrying flashlights, we entered the cave by climbing down steep, rocky terrain. We saw beautiful stalagmites and stalactites, tiny bats, a pseudo-scorpion (a small arachnid that lacks the stinger of a true scorpion), a blood sucking bug called a Cone-nosed Blood Sucker— and even some Mayan pottery shards.

While in the cave in total darkness we sat and listened to our Belizean guide, Nathan tell a scary story. Our two Belizean teachers taught us Belizean songs. After hiking out, we visited the Rio Frio Cave, which is large enough to contain several houses.

We ended the day with a swim at the Rio On Rapids where we also took a group photo. These are just a few of the flora and fauna highlights of our second wonderful day in Belize!
