2008 Q & A

June 13, 2008

What Native Americans lived in Yellowstone? Do any people live there now? Destiny, Grade 5, Grady Brown Elementary, Orange County and the 1st grade, Wiley Elementary

There are 24 Native American tribes associated with Yellowstone, including Shoshone, Bannock, Nez Perce, Crow and Sioux. Some of these peoples passed through the park yearly or seasonally, following the animals. Now Park employees and their families live in the Park — some live here year-round, some only seasonally.

What are some types of trees and/or plants that can be found in Yellowstone that are not in North Carolina? What is the most abundant tree species? Ana-Marie, 10th grade, Southeast Raleigh Magnet High, Wake County and Tyler, 8th grade, East Burke Middle School, Burke County

A few plants found here but not in North Carolina include: Lodgepole Pine, Limber Pine, Sagebrush and Quaking Aspen. The most abundant tree species is the Lodgepole Pine, which covers 80% of the land in the park.

What types of bears are there and please tell me about them. Natalie, 3rd grade, Holly Ridge Elementary, Wake County

There are two species of bear in Yellowstone — Black Bears and Grizzly Bears. Today we saw three Black Bears and two Grizzly Bears. One Black Bear was cinnamon colored. Unlike in North Carolina, a lot of Black Bears here are cinnamon-brown instead of black. We also saw a Grizzly kill a young pronghorn.

What is the difference between a Buffalo and a Bison? Kayla, 5th grade, Grady Brown Elementary, Orange County

Buffalo and Bison are both common names of the same animal. The scientific name is Bison bison.
