Summer Camps for Children
2008

Please use the Summer Camp Registration Form for summer camps only. A completed registration form and check made payable to Museum Extension Fund are necessary to register for summer camps and may be mailed or hand-delivered to the Museum at any time. Processing of registration forms begins February 22 for Friends of the Museum and March 7 for the general public. Registrants will be notified by mail of their registration status.

TROPICAL ADVENTURE

Grab a vine and swing on in to explore tropical rain forests without leaving North Carolina. Meet animals that live there, eat plants that grow there, and explore the connections our state has to the tropics.

From the tropics to the Arctic to a North Carolina forest, animals everywhere are amazingly well adapted to their surroundings. Explore the myriad ways animals “fit” their habitats and reflect predator/prey relationships. Learn about a wide range of creatures from a camouflaged stick insect to a luminescent fish that lives in the depths of the ocean.

Join the Museum’s Junior Curators for lunch between your morning and afternoon classes. Each day we will enjoy our lunches and then either play a game, make a craft, or watch a short nature show. This will be a fun, relaxing hour in between your morning and afternoon learning experiences. Children are expected to bring their own lunches to camp each day.

Programs at Prairie Ridge

Grades 4–7
Prairie Ridge is located off Reedy Creek Road, between Blue Ridge and Edwards Mill roads. All children must be dropped off and picked up at Prairie Ridge. No transportation is available between the Museum and Prairie Ridge. Campers are expected to bring their own lunches to camp each day. More about Prairie Ridge

YOUNG NATURALISTS AT PRAIRIE RIDGE

Campers in this full-day program will explore various local habitats through field trips, interactive projects and programs given by experts. Participants will gain a better understanding and appreciation of our natural world through close examination of animals and the aquatic and terrestrial habitats in which they live.

JUNIOR NATURALISTS AT PRAIRIE RIDGE

8:30 AM–3:30 PM

FEE: $260 PER PERSON ($240 FRIENDS)

Join Museum educators in this new, full-day program as we explore the forests, streams and various habitats of Wake County. Campers will experience the natural world through field trips, projects and programs given by experts at Prairie Ridge. Thursday will be an overnight camping trip to return Friday afternoon.

THE NATURE OF ART

9 AM–NOON

FEE: $80 per person, per week ($75 for Friends)

This new camp will focus on blending nature and art by honing observation skills and searching out the surprises that lie in our own back yards. Recycling, sustainability and other green themes are featured. A nature journaling thread ties the week’s activities together.

Programs at Yates Mill Pond

Grades 1–5
Yates Mill Pond is located south of Raleigh near Penny Road. All children must be dropped off and picked up at Yates Mill Pond unless they are enrolled in our new lunchtime transportation program to the Museum (See "Take Me to the Museum" below). Transportation is not available from the Museum to Yates Mill Pond in the mornings or at the end of the day.

OUTDOOR EXPLORERS AT YATES

This field class emphasizes finding, identifying and learning about the many plants and animals inhabiting Yates Mill Pond. We’ll meet live animals, experiment with plants and play ecology games.

AQUATIC ECOLOGISTS AT YATES

This camp will focus on life in and around the water, from tadpoles to snapping turtles. Learn aquatic science in the field though experiments, activities and observations.

TAKE ME TO THE MUSEUM FROM YATES MILL POND

We offer lunchtime transportation for those weeks when 1st-4th grade students can enroll in Outdoor Explorers or Aquatic Ecologists in the morning and an afternoon class at the Museum. Students will bring their own bag lunch to camp to be eaten at Yates Mill Pond after class ends. They will then be transported to the Museum in a large passenger van for their afternoon class. Parents will need to drop their children off at Yates Mill Pond at 9 a.m. and pick them up at the Museum downtown at 4 p.m. Transportation from the Museum to Yates Mill Pond is not available in the morning or at the end of the day. Space is limited, so sign up early!
