Museum collection manager garners Wildlife Diversity Award

(RALEIGH) North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences’ Collection Manager of Herpetology Jeff Beane was presented with the 2015 Thomas L. Quay Wildlife Diversity Award by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission today. This award recognizes individuals who make outstanding contributions to wildlife diversity in North Carolina and who are considered leaders in wildlife resources conservation.

Beane has outstanding expertise in the amphibians and reptiles of North Carolina, in particular their natural history and conservation. He serves as an important resource to numerous councils, committee, and government agencies that deal with the natural heritage of North Carolina, as well as to members of the public. He is the lead author on the 2010 guide “Amphibians and Reptiles of the Carolinas and Virginia” (UNC Press), has published numerous scientific papers on the natural history of amphibians and reptiles in North Carolina, and is a regular contributor to many popular publications, in particular Wildlife in North Carolina magazine.

In September 2013, Jeff was also named 2012 Wildlife Conservationist of the Year by the Governor’s Conservation Achievement Awards Program, sponsored by the NC Wildlife Federation. He has been working at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences since 1985, during which time he has helped to curate a wide variety of the Museum’s research collections, including terrestrial arthropods, fishes, amphibians and reptiles, and mammals. He has been the full-time Collection Manager of Herpetology since 1995.
