Microbes are essential to the survival of all plant and animal life as well as to the sustainability of every ecosystem on the planet. As such microbes are ubiquitous on Earth and have evolved to consume a wide variety of food sources. Bioremediation is a natural process which takes advantage of the ability of microbes to consume contaminants as their primary food source. In this Café, Claudia Gunsch will discuss how environmental microbiomes can be engineered to clean up the environment.
About our speaker
Claudia Gunsch is the Theodore S. Kennedy Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering where she teaches environmental microbiology and molecular biology to environmental engineers. Her research bridges environmental engineering and molecular biotechnology with applications in bioremediation, wastewater and water treatment. She has been recognized for her research, teaching and service activities with several awards including the 2009 National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Award, 2016 Capers and Marion McDonald Award for Excellence in Mentoring and Advising and the 2016 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize.
