Lifelong Hike: Pilot Mountain State Park & Hawk Watch

The pinnacle of Pilot Mountain rises 1,400 feet above the valley floor and is a prominent feature in the landscape that can be seen from many miles away.  Pilot Mountain in the ancient Sauratown Mountains is a quartzite monadnock that has resisted erosion for millions of years as the surrounding, softer bedrock has worn down to a rolling plain. The dramatic geology also the surrounding, softer bedrock has worn down to a rolling plain.  The dramatic geology also gives us the potential to see large numbers of migrating hawks during this peak migration week.
