Lake Phelps is the second largest natural lake in North Carolina, covering some 16,000 acres on the Pamlico/Albemarle peninsula. One of the last old growth forests in eastern NC lines the northern shore of Lake Phelps, with some bald cypress trees up to 10 feet in diameter. Somerset Plantation was one of the upper South’s largest pre-Civil War plantations. We will explore the wonderful natural diversity of this area and the rich history of life for the early settlers who carved out a life in the densely woody swamps.
