Great Backyard Bird Count at Prairie Ridge

  • Sunday, February 19, 2017
  • 12:30pm - 4:00pm

Get involved in one of the biggest bird citizen science events with the Great Backyard Bird Count!  This worldwide event surveys birds in their winter habitats before they begin to migrate northward by getting people out identifying and counting birds on one four day weekend each year.

We’ll have birding citizen science resources available throughout the day:

  • Join us for a guided bird hike from 1:00-2:00pm.  Meet you by the kiosk!
  • Drop by our bird information station in the Outdoor Classroom to look up birds in a field guide, use the Merlin app, or check out the list of birds that visitors have seen throughout the day (or add to it).
  • Visit the citizen science station in the Outdoor Classroom for a list of helpful birding apps, information about the Merlin app, and resources for how to collect data for the Great Backyard Bird Count and other bird citizen science projects.
  • Take a stroll around Prairie Ridge and collect data on your own.  We’ll have datasheets available in the Outdoor Classroom if you want one, or use the eBird app to submit your data as you go.

North Carolina consistently ranks in the top 10 states in the US for the most people participating in the GBBC, the number of checklists submitted, the number of species spotted, and the number of individual birds reported.  Help us keep our lead while collecting and sharing valuable bird data with researchers worldwide!

No registration is required and all ages are welcome. Be sure to dress for the weather as it is often very cold on the Great Backyard Bird Count weekend. For more information, please contact Chris Goforth at chris.goforth@naturalsciences.org or 919.707.8882.
